The petrol generator is still one of the most widely used generators when it comes to providing power on site. This is quite remarkable as there are quite a few drawbacks to the conventional generator and there are now quite a few better alternatives. Therefore: 7x why the petrol generator should be replaced by a (sustainable) alternative!

A petrol genset runs on fuel: petrol. And the price of petrol fluctuates a lot. Especially when used frequently, fuel costs quickly add up. Sometimes you pay hundreds or even thousands of euros for petrol. Admittedly, diesel gensets are cheaper, but even these costs are nothing compared to solar gensets, for example.
With petrol gensets, you do not know exactly how long you will be able to use power. The fuel will run out one day. At that point, there is no more electricity. Equipment fails and work has to be stopped until the tank is refilled. This costs time – and money. Annoying. Especially if it involves an emergency generator. A hybrid genset with solar panels does not have these problems.
*The solar panels continuously generate energy that is used to charge a battery. Even when it is cloudy or raining. In an emergency and at times of peak load, the system taps into a back-up battery powered by biodiesel. So you have power anytime, anywhere!
Perhaps the most obvious disadvantage of the petrol generator is its CO2 and nitrogen emissions. Depending on the model, the petrol generator emits up to 100 times more greenhouse gases compared to a green battery. This is not only bad for the environment, but also for users and people around the unit. Moreover, it also produces nasty odours!
A petrol genset makes noise. Diesel generators are quieter, but they are still noisy. So do you use these generators on a construction site or when working in buildings with many people? If so, it is a nuisance. And when used in nature, you disturb local wildlife. Fortunately, this is why our mobile solar panels also act as silent generators.
The fact that a petrol genset needs fuel equates to periodic maintenance. The engine and components need regular cleaning, the air filter needs to be changed and the engine oil needs to be changed. This too costs time and money. Our power generator with solar cells has no such maintenance. It only needs a wipe over every now and then!
You choose a generator largely on the basis of capacity. You consider which appliances you want to connect and then calculate the capacity needed (tip: take into account peak current draw and start-up peaks). With a petrol generator, you are stuck with a maximum capacity. With that, you are not as flexible. Our portable solar panels, on the other hand, you can easily switch modules to increase capacity. That saves again.
Following on from the above disadvantage: conditions. These affect the performance of a petrol generator. Are you working at high altitudes, at high/low temperatures or in high humidity, for example? Then the petrol genset often does not work as well and delivers lower power. Solar panels do not suffer from this. As long as light falls on them, they do their job nicely!
