The silent power of Rembrandt Park

The problem

When you want to relax in the park on your free afternoon, you are not waiting for noisy operations. Especially not when a diesel generator is also running loudly and monotonously. In this respect, BAM Amsterdam had a predictive gift when work was needed on the waterfront in Amsterdam’s Rembrandt Park.

The objective

Did you happen to walk through the Rembrandtpark in Amsterdam in March? Because BAM Amsterdam was working on the waterfront here. To minimise inconvenience in the park, they opted for a 15 kVA Solar Generator from Volta-Energy! The objective is to provide BAM with all the sustainable energy it needs to carry out the work in the quietest way possible.

The challenge

The challenge? Using a Solar Generator to power the construction shack and work container. Given the moderate weather conditions in March, it is a challenge to generate all the energy needed with just the Solar Generator. Will this be possible with a 15 kVA Solar Generator?

The results

The work in the Rembrandtpark took place in March, so a generator was needed not only to supply electricity to the construction shack and work container, but also to provide them with electric heating from time to time. BAM Amsterdam therefore chose Volta Energy’s 15 kVA solar generator, on the advice of the Volta Energy specialist.

BAM Amsterdam’s main reason for choosing a solar generator was to limit noise pollution. However, we were also keen to demonstrate that in addition to being virtually silent, a solar generator is also a better choice financially, even in the darker months. We therefore compared the consumption of the 15 kVA solar generator with a conventional diesel generator and the HVO B100 biodiesel generator for a period of 22 days.

It was clear that with only solar power, the Volta solar generator could not meet the full energy requirement of 350 kWh given the poor weather conditions in March and April. Also, due to the many trees in the park, the environment did not offer an optimal amount of sunlight. Nevertheless, nearly 100 kWh of energy was generated through the PV systems. It was expected that an optimal location with the same weather conditions during this period could have provided 50% more energy output.

At the bottom line, there was nevertheless a financial gain of over €1,300 compared to the conventional diesel generator and even a gain of almost €2,500 compared to the biodiesel generator. Moreover, almost 7,000 kg less CO2 was emitted and a saving of 8.4 kg in NOx emissions was achieved. Thus, not only did visitors to the park experience less inconvenience from the work, but the flora and fauna in Rembrandt Park also benefited from the choice of the solar generator. We therefore hope to work together more often in the future!

The power generators come in different sizes - from 6 kVA to 120 kVA - so that all construction sites and events can be supplied with renewable energy on site. Our bio-solar-hybrid generators are more sustainable than conventional diesel generators and hybrid diesel-battery generators. When the sun is not shining, our generators automatically switch from solar to battery and then to bio-diesel genset. This way, we make sure you always have power..
