Reliable, sustainable energy during roadworks

This case study describes a project with one of our customers in Germany, a nationwide company committed to continuously shrinking its CO₂ footprint and relying on our solutions to do it.

The problem

Construction sites, especially those far from the grid, need a reliable, cost-efficient, scalable, and mobile power supply to keep work running smoothly. Waiting for a grid connection can mean losing valuable weeks, sometimes months. In some cases, that connection never comes at all. Every day of delay pushes back the project start, and with it, the delivery date. That's not just costly, it's frustrating for construction site managers and teams who just want to get to work.

At the same time, more and more construction companies want, and need, to work in an innovative, resource-efficient way to speed up the shift toward low-carbon construction. That means a growing number of electric tools and machines need a reliable power supply, and it has to be as quiet, clean, and efficient as possible. So how do you make that happen?

The objective

The construction site manager needed to set up the site and start work on time, with no delays, completely independent of a grid connection. That called for a self-sufficient power supply available 24/7, reliable in all weather conditions, with significantly less noise and fuel consumption than a traditional generator.

The challenge

Power needs to be available whenever it's needed, including at night and when the sun isn't shining. Solar panels alone aren't enough for that. At the same time, stability is critical: outages and downtime have to be prevented so construction doesn't grind to a halt. And the whole setup needs to make the site manager's job easier, not harder.

The solution and the results

The choice fell on the Volta 15 from Volta Energy: a reliable 3-in-1 mobile energy system delivered ready to use. The site manager could set up the site and get to work immediately, without waiting for a grid connection.

Because the work mostly took place at night, the Volta proved its worth. During the day, the solar panels charged the battery pack, which then could provide energy nearly the entire night. The backup only kicked in when it was truly needed. The output figures prove it: 243 kWh came from the solar panels, and just 157 kWh from the backup.

What the site manager appreciated most was that he and his crew were no longer exposed to the noise of a conventional diesel generator throughout their shift. The Volta 15 runs quieter, making work on-site more pleasant while also reducing noise nuisance for the surrounding area.

The required stability was guaranteed through remote monitoring: performance data from the Volta could be read and managed remotely, allowing potential issues to be caught before they caused downtime. Combined with delivery, fuel management, 24/7 remote monitoring, and pickup, this meant the site manager could focus on building. Volta Energy took care of the power supply. That's Energy as a Service.

And sustainability? That was the icing on the cake: quieter and using significantly less fuel than a conventional diesel generator, the Volta 15 fit perfectly with the company's ambition to build roads in a more resource-efficient way. It delivered a substantial CO₂ saving.

Since the success of this first project, our customer has rented many more tribrid energy systems from us for other projects, not only improving their sustainability balance significantly, but also positively impacting workplace safety and crew satisfaction.

Based on this, we've built a lasting partnership with this customer that continues to this day.
