We don't leave Ukrainian refugees out in the cold

Millions of people have fled Ukraine since the war began in February 2022. Over 70,000 Ukrainians currently reside in the Netherlands. Westervoort is one of the municipalities providing shelter, on a business site at IJsseldijk-Driegaardensestraat, where around 80 refugees are currently housed. However, the reception center didn't have enough power, and outages were a regular occurrence. Understandably, that's not acceptable.

Because the center lacked sufficient power and outages kept happening, the municipality of Westervoort asked Volta Energy to find a suitable solution. And if that solution could be green too, even better.

The objective

Housing around 80 people comfortably requires a substantial amount of electricity, especially during cold periods, when the last thing you want is for people who've already fled their homes to be left in the cold. The objective of this project was to provide the reception center's residents with a reliable power supply.

The challenge

Powering a reception center housing 80 people meant the main challenge was delivering a generator capable of supplying genuinely sufficient power. Consumption is often much higher during winter, and outages like the ones that had already occurred simply weren't an option. That meant a larger power supply was needed during the coldest periods.

The results

Volta Energy ultimately supplied the municipality of Westervoort with two Volta 45 and one Volta 120. The Volta 120 we deployed during the coldest periods to replace the two Volta 45, to guarantee the center always had enough power. That guarantee held: residents experienced no further power outages and were able to live there comfortably, given the circumstances, for the duration of their stay.

The solar systems also delivered significant savings for the municipality. Westervoort saved 427 liters of fuel, resulting in a cost saving of €1,275.43 compared to a conventional diesel generator. On top of that, CO2 emissions were reduced by 5,523.32 kilograms, and NOx emissions by nearly 2 kilograms. Numbers worth being proud of.

In the end, there were a lot of happy faces. The center's residents were satisfied, the municipality of Westervoort was satisfied, and of course we at Volta Energy were very pleased with the result too. In short: a successful project.
