Environmental zones & energy supply: what about it?

Environmental zones & energy supply: what about it?

In both the Netherlands and abroad, more and more cities are introducing environmental zones. On the one hand, to reduce nitrogen and CO2 emissions, but on the other, mainly to improve air quality in city centres. Indeed, due to the large number of vehicles, it is often not particularly healthy. But what exactly does such an environmental zone entail? And what does it mean for the energy supply of your project?

Environmental zones & energy supply: what about it?

What are environmental zones?

Environmental zones are areas where certain diesel vehicles are not allowed to enter because they simply emit too many pollutants. This often applies to diesel trucks. But depending on the vehicle’s emission class, the ban may also apply to buses, passenger cars and vans. With a vehicle that does not meet the conditions, you will not get a parking permit in the environmental zone, for example. Or you will be fined if you drive through the zone anyway.

Does it also apply to other diesel devices?

An environmental zone is often thought of in the transport sector. Logical, because that’s where it all started. However, in many environmental zones, the rules are also extended to other diesel engines such as conventional generators. This means that diesel generators that do not meet emission requirements are also banned from use in certain places. Nevertheless, even within these low-emission zones, on-site power is occasionally needed. Think of construction work or events.

Stage V generators

Meanwhile, European laws impose stricter requirements on particulate emissions and minimum limits on nitrogen and CO2 reduction. From this flowed the so-called Stage-V standard, which stipulates that new diesel engines must be equipped with exhaust gas aftertreatment. These so-called Stage V generators meet all requirements and, unlike the old diesel generators, are allowed in environmental zones.

Flexible legislation

So is it now mandatory to use Stage-V generators? No. The law only states that new machines must meet the standards. So older generators can still be used, just often not in environmental zones. Of course, it may also be that the client or the municipality requires you to use cleaner generators outside these areas too.

Other environmentally friendly solutions

While reducing emissions from diesel generators is obviously a first step in the right direction, it is even better to exchange these generators for an environmentally-friendly power supply with zero emissions. With Volta Energy’s solar-powered mobile generators, you can also power your projects anytime, anywhere. In all environmental zones. No matter how strict the local rules are.

Generators for environmental zones

Volta Energy’s portable solar panels are therefore excellent generators for in environmental or low-emission zones. Not only do they reduce nitrogen and CO2 emissions by up to 100%, but they also operate silently and do not cause unpleasant odours. This is especially nice for locations where there are a lot of people. Such as offices, construction sites and festival grounds. Moreover, they do not require any fuel, so they save a lot of money. A win-win situation.
