Whereas our backup genset used to run on HVO 100 (clean replacement for diesel), it still always released a small amount of nitrogen oxides, carbon monoxide and particulate matter. By replacing the current method of backup with a hydrogen-based backup, we bring the emissions down to zero. Therefore, the hydrogen genset offers environmental benefits in addition to the standard benefits of a genset. They are completely emission-free and do not produce foul smells and noise. There are several ways to convert hydrogen into electricity. We choose the most effective way, which is to convert hydrogen electrochemically into electricity using a fuel cell. Compared to an internal combustion engine, this achieves higher efficiency, so less hydrogen is needed. During consumption, nothing but water is emitted from the hydrogen genset.
