Sustainable road construction in Germany with Strabag AG

The problem

For the German road construction industry, Strabag AG has been successful for 100 years and is number one when it comes to road construction in Germany. Their corporate culture is to always remain innovative. Through sustainable construction materials and sustainable processes, they want to take a leading role towards the change of CO2-saving and resource-saving construction of German roads. So that everything keeps going according to plan, it is necessary to power and recharge the construction equipment.

The objective

Construction of new roads is done in many different places and by different clients such as: Federal, municipal, provincial and private clients. When a new road is built in a city or village, noise pollution is an important issue, but when renovating or constructing a new highway, speed is precisely the focus point. In this sector, people work day and night and power is always needed. If a diesel generator is chosen for this purpose, there is always noise pollution, wastage of diesel and unnecessary greenhouse gas emissions. The objective is to be able to supply Strabag AG with power day and night with minimum diesel consumption and greenhouse gas emissions.

The challenge

Power is needed 24/7 and with all weather conditions. Even at night, when the sun is not shining, work has to continue. Are solar panels the most suitable option for this? In addition, this project is not around the corner; due to the long travel time from the Netherlands to Germany, we need to avoid failures on this project.

The results

Strabag AG’s operations mainly take place at night, which is why a 15kVA model was chosen. Because of the sunshade, the battery pack is charged during the day. Because the battery pack is fully charged, it lasts almost all night. This is also evident in the generation of power. In the month of May, the solar panels delivered 243 kWh and the generator 157 kWh.

Since the first project between Strabag AG and Volta-Energy, Strabag has rented 4 more solar generators. For all projects, a 15kVA model was chosen and nice savings were achieved in each project. The target was achieved and we are very satisfied with the cooperation between this company.

During the cooperation between Strabag AG and Volta Energy, 597 litres of diesel have already been saved by choosing a solar-hybrid genset. This has also saved 2075.45 KG of carbon monoxide (Co2) and 2.75 KG of nitrogen monoxide (NOx).
