The Black Cross also turned green!

The Problem

Who doesn’t know the Zwarte Cross? Not only is it an incredibly popular music & motocross festival, but it is also a truly unique phenomenon and the largest festival in the Netherlands. However, to host such a big event requires a lot of energy, of course. Consuming many liters of gasoline in the middle of the summer while the sun is shining, even at enormously high fuel prices in 2022? That is not really attractive in terms of finances and sustainability. From the point of view of Corporate Social Responsibility, an environmentally friendly solution was therefore sought.

The objective

In addition to the financial side of things, the world of festivals is strongly engaged in a greening process in order to make holding festivals less of a burden on the environment. In 2019, the Volta 3 kVA solar generator was already showing off during the Zwarte Cross, but the ambition for 2022 was a lot bigger! Indeed, the goal during Black Cross 2022 is to power the crew, catering and restaurant facilities with fully renewable energy. For this we used our newest and largest 120 kVA solar generator, which can replace the diesel generators for the full 100%.

The challenge

At a festival, an enormous amount of energy is consumed at different locations over a vast terrain. Therefore, a solution is needed that is not only sustainable and quiet, but also mobile and with a large capacity. Our new 120 kVA solar generator is made for challenges like these. The genset is transported on a trailer, which makes it easy to move and so can be used on the Black Cross grounds. It also has a battery capacity of 120 kWh, allowing it to continue running at night with the surplus energy built up during the day.

The results

About that sustainable objective, we can say wholeheartedly: it has been amply achieved! The 120 kVA solar generator has completely replaced the diesel generators and thus achieved enormous savings in fossil fuel consumption. The brilliant weather in the month of July obviously helped this. As a result, no less than 7.5 kilotons less CO2 was emitted during the 2022 Black Cross. A result of which both Volta Energy and the Zwarte Cross are enormously proud! Of course we hope to be back next year!
