The results
The work in the Rembrandtpark took place in March, so a generator was needed not only to supply electricity to the construction shack and work container, but also to provide them with electric heating from time to time. BAM Amsterdam therefore chose Volta Energy’s 15 kVA solar generator, on the advice of the Volta Energy specialist.
BAM Amsterdam’s main reason for choosing a solar generator was to limit noise pollution. However, we were also keen to demonstrate that in addition to being virtually silent, a solar generator is also a better choice financially, even in the darker months. We therefore compared the consumption of the 15 kVA solar generator with a conventional diesel generator and the HVO B100 biodiesel generator for a period of 22 days.
It was clear that with only solar power, the Volta solar generator could not meet the full energy requirement of 350 kWh given the poor weather conditions in March and April. Also, due to the many trees in the park, the environment did not offer an optimal amount of sunlight. Nevertheless, nearly 100 kWh of energy was generated through the PV systems. It was expected that an optimal location with the same weather conditions during this period could have provided 50% more energy output.
At the bottom line, there was nevertheless a financial gain of over β¬1,300 compared to the conventional diesel generator and even a gain of almost β¬2,500 compared to the biodiesel generator. Moreover, almost 7,000 kg less CO2 was emitted and a saving of 8.4 kg in NOx emissions was achieved. Thus, not only did visitors to the park experience less inconvenience from the work, but the flora and fauna in Rembrandt Park also benefited from the choice of the solar generator. We therefore hope to work together more often in the future!
