How does a solar power generator work?

Three components work together automatically:

  1. Solar panels generate electricity during the day, also under cloud cover.
  2. The battery stores that energy and supplies continuous power, through the night and during peak loads.
  3. The backup (an HVO engine or a fuel cell, depending on the model) only starts when the battery runs low and the sun can't keep up.

Frequently asked questions about solar power generators

  • Does a solar power generator work in UK weather?
    Yes. Solar panels still generate power under cloud cover, just less. The battery absorbs the fluctuations and the backup starts automatically when needed. Your power supply doesn't stop, in summer or in winter.
  • Can a solar power generator supply power 24/7?
    Yes. During the day the panels charge the battery; at night the battery supplies the power. If the battery runs low, the backup takes over.
  • What fuel does the backup use?
    Most models use HVO, a renewable diesel replacement made from waste oils and fats. The ZERO models use a propane or methanol fuel cell. Read more about HVO: the advantages and disadvantages.
  • Is a solar power generator quieter than a diesel generator?
    Yes. While the Volta runs on solar and battery there is no engine running, so it is silent. The backup only runs when the battery needs topping up.
  • What does it cost to hire a solar power generator?
